Great Smoky Mountains National Park has over 800 miles of trails and some of the most biodiverse forests in North America. Entry to the park is free, but overnight stays in the backcountry require a permit and a reservation through the National Park Service. Permits cost $8 per person per night (with a maximum of $40), and campsites often need to be reserved well in advance during peak seasons.
