In a competition held on the island of Rab, the inhabitants discovered the oldest olive tree on their island. It is an 8-meter-tall, gnarled tree that experts say was planted in 772 AD, making it 1,239 years old today.

A nine-member panel of experts was involved in determining the age of the trees, using a resistograph – an electronic measuring device that measures the resistance of wood when a 1.5-mm-thick needle is inserted through it.
