The beautiful old village center consists of a former castle site. Nisse originated in the early thirteenth century on the former island of Zuid-Beveland on the Zwake River. At that time, the village was still called Gerbennesse. The large Gothic church dates from the fifteenth century, while Nisse's characteristic church tower is a century older. On the village square at number 25 stands the former Nisse castle farm. In the center of the square stands an old water pump from the eighteenth century.
