The charcoal-burning settlement of Ruppertshain (Ruprechtshan) was first mentioned around 1290, as far as is known, as Ruprecheshain in the "Eppsteiner Lehensverzeichnis" (Eppsteiner Lehensverzeichnis).[3] Unlike the numerous surrounding villages ending in -heim or -bach, which originated in the Frankish period (8th and 9th centuries), the villages ending in -hain—such as Schneidhain, Mammolshain, Neuenhain, and Altenhain—date from the late medieval development of the land, when steep slopes were used to build villages. From 1636 to 1650, the village was deserted.[3]
In the late 19th century, Ruppertshain became a climatic health resort, and tuberculosis patients were primarily treated there.
On December 31, 1971, as part of the administrative reform in Hesse, the municipalities of Ruppertshain and Eppenhain merged voluntarily to form the municipality of Rossert.[4][5] The municipality of Rossert, in turn, was incorporated into the city of Kelkheim on January 1, 1977, by state law.[6][7] Ruppertshain and Eppenhain became districts of Kelkheim. No local districts were formed.[8]
