Ísafjörður lies on the Skutulsfjörður, a tributary of Ísafjarðardjúp, surrounded by the steep mountain slopes of Eyrarfjall (up to 731 m) and Kirkjubólsfjall (up to 832 m). The town is the economic and administrative center of the Westfjords.
The sandbank (Icelandic: eyri) that supports the town has been repeatedly reclaimed to create new land. Thus, the town's area has continuously expanded; today, the peninsula stretches almost from one shore of the fjord to the other, creating an effectively protected harbor.
