The Bad Harzburg-Ilsenburg railway line was a busy route until 1945. Since the East German border had been in place between Eckertal and Stapelburg since 1945, rail traffic was interrupted. For a time, the line continued westward from Eckertal until it was completely shut down in 1973. In the GDR, trains terminated in Stapelburg. The only remaining piece of track between Eckertal and Stapelburg can still be found today on the Ecker Bridge, under which the border between East Germany and West Germany ran exactly in the middle of the Ecker stream. A German citizen was shot dead by East German border troops on this bridge in 1976; a memorial now commemorates this event.
