The parish of Remšnik, the oldest parish in the Drava Valley, dates back to 1165, when the church of St. George was built on this site. In 1201, the church acquired parish rights, which brought it autonomy and independence. At that time, the parish covered a wide area - it was bordered by the Suha stream to the west, the Črmenica stream to the east, the Drava river to the south, and the Radelce ridge to the north. Its development was greatly influenced by the monastery of St. Paul, which maintained its influence here until 1782, when it was dissolved.

In the past, the church was surrounded by a cemetery, a rectory, and cultivated fields, which suggests that it was the spiritual and everyday focal point of the place. Over time, the image of Remšnik changed; Today, in the immediate vicinity, there is a nine-year primary school, which has been operating in the town since 1815, as well as a playground, a shop, a tavern, a hall and the Remšnik Mineral Museum. The history of the town and the parish are closely intertwined, as the growth of the population over the centuries created an increasing need for a sanctuary, thus maintaining the role of the church as the central space of the community.
