At very low tide on Mornington Strand, you can spot the remains of the Eilean Glas, a coastal trader that ran aground here on 1 May 1980 while carrying salt from Stornoway. Efforts to refloat her failed, and she was broken up on site. Today, one large section and scattered smaller pieces lie on the sands between Bettystown and Mornington, only visible when the tide is far out. Worth seeing if you’re walking the beach, but something to keep in mind for swimmers and kite-surfers when the tide is in.
