In 1933, the Terra Nostra Society, led by Vasco Bensaude, purchased their family's property in Furnas from the heirs of the Marquises of Praia and Monforte to build the first hotel in the Azores. The Terra Nostra Garden Hotel opened in 1935, and the following year, Vasco Bensaude purchased the adjacent botanical garden, the Tank, and renamed the entire property Terra Nostra Garden.

Led by the expertise and collaboration of Scottish gardener John McEnroy, Vasco began a period of growth and renewal for the Terra Nostra Garden. This legacy lives on to this day.

In 2015, the Bensaude family paid tribute to Vasco Elias Bensaude by unveiling a bronze bust at the entrance to Ginkgo Avenue, a path he conceived and built in the 1930s.
