The historic site of Hurtebise, whose name evokes the violence of the winds that sweep across the plateau, housed a monument before the war, probably built in 1904 in memory of the Battle of Craonne, on March 7, 1814, which pitted Russian soldiers against Napoleon's troops.

Designed by the architect Georges Ermant, then senator and mayor of Laon, the monument will serve as the setting for a grandiose event to mark the centenary of the battle on Sunday, March 8, 1914.

This monument, a simple obelisk topped with a star, served as a landmark for the artillery and was therefore completely destroyed in the first fighting in September 1914.
