    Fehmarnsund Bridge Cable
This cable is one of 80 diagonal steel cables crossing in a net-like pattern that can be seen on the Fehmarnsund Bridge. The nearly 250-meter-long arched structure over the shipping lane, with a clearance of 23 meters, enables a quick crossing of the
Fehmarnsund Strait and is affectionately known as the "coat hanger." On April 30, 1963, the 963-meter-long connection between the island of Fehmarn and the East Holstein mainland was inaugurated. The 69-meter-high Fehmarnsund Bridge is a significant structure and an important section of the so-called "Vogelfluglinie" (Vogel Flight Line). The bridge has been a listed historic monument since 1999.

This network arch bridge consists of a slender, steel deck bridge and a basket-handle arch. The suspension cables have a diameter of between 69 mm and 104 mm, depending on the side, to meet the requirements for load-bearing capacity, wind forces, etc. Our cable originates from the road curve and was replaced as part of the comprehensive maintenance program for the Fehmarnsund Bridge in July 2024. Replacing a cable took an average of two to three days, with the greatest challenge being performing it while traffic was running.

It is hard to imagine that this piece of hanging rope weighs over 1 ton
