The sun was shining over the Desna valley at this time. It was the war year 1916, Monday September 18th. In the afternoon of that day a dam broke in the mountains above the valley. Within a few minutes, 62 people were killed in the raging elements and there was high property damage. The dam was never rebuilt and its ruins still bear silent witness to this tragedy.
