Before the 14th century, Naarden was located about three kilometers north of the present-day city. It was destroyed at the beginning of the Hook and Cod Wars and rebuilt as a fortified city (with city charter) on its present site between 1350 and 1355. From 1411 to around 1683, Naarden was a port city that enjoyed extensive fishing rights as a privilege. In the 15th and 16th centuries, there was a flourishing textile industry.

The city was captured by the Spanish in 1572 during the Eighty Years' War, who murdered 700 inhabitants after the city's surrender ("Bloedbad van Naarden").[2] In 1672, the French conquered Naarden during the Dutch War, and the following year, William III of Orange-Nassau recaptured the city. From 1675 to 1685, Naarden was transformed into a fortress city.
