Memorial to the author of "Heart of Darkness," who was Polish. Conrad was born in present-day Ukraine. His father, a fighter for Polish independence, was exiled to the Kyiv region, then still part of the Russian Empire. Conrad's early life was spent in Lviv and Kraków. He worked as a sailor and translated the works of other authors into Polish.
