The Hermann Maier statue, which his hometown dedicated to the former ski racer in 2000, was originally intended to depict the "hero" in a different pose.
Fall of the Century in Nagano
"All the men in the community wanted to have Hermann depicted in his famous 'flying pose' during the fall of the century in Nagano," recalls local mayor Thomas Oberreiter. "But the women vehemently opposed it. They felt that something negative and dramatic shouldn't be glorified. In the end, the men agreed, and Hermann was immortalized swinging at the goal."
