Welcome to Lake Tarina. The tranquility and clean air invite you to relax. But the purpose of building this lake or pond wasn't relaxation; quite the opposite. The pond is an artificial water reservoir that was essential for powering the stamp mills. The stamp mills, in turn, were used to process the gold-bearing ore.

The reservoirs—also called 'tăuri—are almost 300 years old. They were created to ensure sufficient volume and a constant water flow to power the stamp mills. Construction of the reservoirs began in 1733, but this may be the moment when the plans for their construction were commissioned by the authorities. Of the more than 100 such lakes created between the hills and ridges surrounding Roșia Montană, several still exist today. The largest are equipped with sophisticated mechanisms—including cranes—for controlling the water. The control mechanisms, initially constructed of wood, were gradually replaced by metal cranes operated from a tower. The dams and water outlets are remarkable examples of engineering architecture. Water from the surrounding hills is collected behind the dam. At the base of the dams is a tunnel connected to a control tower. The tower, in turn, stands in the middle of the lake.
