On the northern slope between the castle and the city fountain stretches the former Jewish quarter with its narrow alleys. It was built in the 8th century during the reign of King Dinis and is one of the most important testimonies to Jewish presence in Portugal.
Thanks to a reconstruction and renovation program that has been underway for several years, it is one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Portugal.
