The Phoenix Lake was only opened in 2011, but is no longer an insider tip, especially on nice days. Only around four kilometers as the crow flies from Dortmund city center, it is stress-free and idyllic. Around the lake, ultra-smooth asphalt beckons to get on the pedals.

Part of the Emscher cycle path. There are various restaurants and cafes by the lake.

The Phönix-See is a 24-hectare lake on the 99-hectare site of the former Hermannshütte in Dortmund-Hörde. For years, high-quality residential units, commercial and office buildings, a marina, a floating stage, amusement islands, a promenade and restaurants have been built on its banks. 3 million cubic meters of soil were dredged for the 3 meter deep lake. Ten years after the initial planning, the official starting shot for the flooding was given on October 1, 2010.

The site has been dominated by a steel mill for more than 160 years. It was closed in 2001, the first groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated in 2005, followed by dredging for four years: the old facilities and their massive foundations had to be dug up, old mine tunnels had to be filled in. The excavators move more than 2.5 million cubic meters of soil: they create terraces on which the first houses will be built from 2011. In the west is the harbor, a little further the "culture island", which will be connected to the bank by a bridge and will offer space for concerts or theater performances. It's quieter in the east: a green area with a large hill is being created between the two residential areas. The Dortmunder Stadtwerke (DSW21) will spend 67 million euros on the entire project.
At the beginning of the lake filling, the pumps that kept the groundwater low were turned off. In one year, around 600,000 cubic meters of ground and fresh water ran into the lake. Not only the lake determines the area, but also a river: the Emscher. For more than 160 years it had to pass through a canal as a sewage flow. Now it is allowed to meander - free of sewage - along the lake through new floodplains, separated from Phoenix Lake by a lake promenade.
