These maisonettes are typical of the houses Atlanta's workers lived in in the early 20th century. The Empire Textile Co. built them for its white mill workers, but they moved out after the Atlanta race riots of 1906, and Black people began renting them.

The houses are typically one room wide and up to four rooms deep. They are called

"shotgun" houses because the interior and exterior doors are aligned, so that a shot could supposedly be fired through them from front to back. Another theory is that the name comes from the African word

"to-gun," meaning a gathering place.
