The reserve encompasses ancient plant formations growing on the ramparts that once surrounded a 17th-century Calvinist church. These ramparts were likely renovated by the Calvinists, but were originally Tatar defensive ramparts from the 13th century. They are the site of a famous battle with the Tatars in 1241.
