there was cell coverage so we just scanned the QR code to pay the permit fee. No reservation was required. We did have a warning note on our windshield when we got back for not displaying the day pass. We didn't read the information but maybe there is something you need to put in your windshield. Doesn't make sense to me if they make you pay the permit online and enter you vehicle license plate number. I would think that would be sufficient. I'm not sure what we are supposed to display in our car

Embark on a moderate hiking adventure along the Three Fingered Jack via Pacific Crest Trail, a route spanning 6.3 miles (10.1 km). You will ascend 2490 feet (759 metres) over an estimated 3 hours and 24 minutes, offering a rewarding journey through varied landscapes. As you hike, you will pass through areas affected by past wildfires, which now provide expansive views and striking stands of white "ghost trees," creating a unique visual experience.

Before you head out, remember that a free self-issue wilderness permit is required for day trips between June 15 and October 15. The trail can have significant sun exposure in burn areas, so it is wise to start early and bring protective clothing, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay comfortable. Be aware that lingering snow can be present in June, and mosquitoes can be abundant in July, so plan your visit accordingly.

This trail offers close-up views of the distinctive, jagged Three Fingered Jack peak, which is a shield volcano, and provides distant vistas of other prominent Cascade Range volcanoes like Mount Washington and Mount Jefferson. Keep an eye out for Wasco Lake along the way, and you might even spot mountain goats, adding to the natural allure of this route within the Mount Jefferson Wilderness.

You can expect to complete this route in about 1 hour and 3 minutes. As you follow the path, which includes sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, you will pass through areas marked by bear grass and tree snags from a past fire, offering unique scenery. Look out for expansive views of Mount Washington and the Three Sisters mountains to the north, and from a saddle, you can spot Three Fingered Jack in the distance before descending to the inviting deep blue waters of Square Lake.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with the best times to hike typically from June through November. If you prefer cooler weather, consider going in early summer or late autumn. Be aware that parts of the trail can be exposed to the sun, so prepare accordingly for warmer days. Parking is generally available at the trailhead, making access convenient for your adventure.

Square Lake is a notable destination within the Mount Jefferson Wilderness, offering a beautiful natural feature that is particularly appealing for a refreshing dip on a warm day. The trail's journey through areas affected by an old fire provides a unique ecological perspective, showcasing nature's resilience. This accessible route serves as an excellent introduction to the region's stunning volcanic landscapes and pristine alpine lakes.
