Its original name was Csomboly. The earliest traces of it can be found in the papal tithe register of 1332–37. It was destroyed during the Turkish occupation. It was built in 1766. Its 39-meter-high tower was raised to 53.5 meters in 1911. Ferencz Maderspach, a valiant major and heroic defender of Fehértemplom, who fought in Damjanics' army, died here.

Its famous building, the inner castle, may have been built in the 18th century, although we cannot provide exact data on this. The Csekonics were the first to build this castle. The castle was located in the middle of Zsombolya, in the area of the once ornate 6-hectare English park. Opposite it was an older church, and in its neighborhood were more significant public buildings: a school and a health center.

Its German majority population partly fled at the end of World War II, partly was deported to the Soviet Union. In 1951, 486 Banat Swabians were deported to Bărăgan.
