The funerary chapel was built after the death of Queen Katharina and was built between 1820 and 1824, according to the design of the court architect Giovanni Salucci, born in Italy, on the site of the ruinous Burg Wirtemberg, the ancestral stronghold of the House of Württemberg. Of this is located in the church, as Spolie, the sacred stone of the castle chapel. He is a stone document, which says that the Worms shepherd Adalbert II on 7 February 1083 consecrated the local castle chapel there. The stone is also the earliest documentary evidence for the dynasty Württemberg.
The funerary chapel served from 1825 to 1899 as a Russian Orthodox church. Even today, a Russian Orthodox service is held every year on Whit Monday.
