The shrine was founded in 1062 to pray for military victory. He first began as Hatomori Hachiman-gu, worshiped by a powerful clan, and was reconstructed in 1593 by the Nambu clan of Morioka as a protective shrine for Morioka Castle, which anchored the local deity of the area and was widely worshiped by humans. In 1680, the 29th feudal lord Shigenobu Nambu founded the shrine as today's Hachiman-gu Shrine. The god Homudawake-no-Mikoto was so venerated that he is rooted in the life of the region as God for the roots of human life, which included agriculture, industry, trade and all other livelihoods. The shrine is still worshiped as a place of worship for the citizens of Morioka. Many of the 6.6-acre shrines, restored in 1997, each with their own history and significance, can be seen, such as the central Morioka Hachiman-gu in its bright red and beautiful carvings, the ancient Kasamori Inari Shrine and the Iwate Gogoku Shrine dedicated to the war dead in Iwate Prefecture.
