Located on a Roman road and equipped with a stately castle, the Franconian settlement core was a central place in the Eifel very early on. Hillesheim is mentioned for the first time in the property register of the monastery in Prüm in 943. Nemensgeber is said to be the Franconian noble Hildin - the home of Hildin. The redeveloped town center is surrounded by the still well-preserved and accessible city wall (accessible from mid-March to the end of October).
