If you drive out of town on the Europaring and turn left at the Werner-Voß-Straße intersection toward Elfrath, you will pass a site steeped in ancient history.

Archaeologists under the direction of Dr. Christoph Reichmann, the former director of the Burg Linn Museum, unearthed the site now known as the "Elfrath Sanctuary" in 1988.

Roman shards and bricks had already been found in connection with the construction of the neighboring sports facility. Therefore, the archaeologists hoped to find further traces from the Roman period at this location. The archaeologists suspected a Roman villa on the site. During their excavations, however, they stumbled upon a sensation.

On the green area, which is now freely accessible, they discovered a temple complex located within a sacred precinct surrounded by ditches.

The archaeologists date the originally very massive stone temple to the 2nd century AD. They assume that a sanctuary already existed on this site in pre-Roman times. According to Reichmann, the structure is a classical podium temple, which is unusual for a rural sanctuary and has no equivalent in the Germanic provinces of the Roman Empire.
