In the vicinity of the Great Bishop's Lake there are funerary sites of prehistoric times with grave mounds from the Hallstatt period and burials of the La Tène period.
    middle Ages
In 1504, the Great Episcopal pond was sold to the Bishop of Bamberg by the Baiersdorf agent. The name of the carp pond indicates the medieval sale.
The Bamberg bishops incorporated the waters in their extensive Weiherbesitz. A sea master was used to manage the pond. In the outskirts of the Röttenbach 1572 swampy areas were drained.
