Goryokakaku is Hakodate's favorite tourist destination. Originally a fortress built at the end of the Edo period, it is now open as a park.
A characteristic feature of Goryokaku is its giant star shape. It was made in this form so as not to create blind spots in enemy invasions. Artillery units were installed at each point of the star and prepared for attacks by the enemy.
