Tucked into the forest just off the Akamina Parkway, the First Oil Well in Western Canada (Lineham Discovery Well No. 1) marks the site of a 1902 strike that helped launch Alberta’s energy industry. Though the well didn’t produce much in the long term, it was the first productive oil well in Western Canada—and a spark for future exploration. Today, it’s a designated National Historic Site, with interpretive panels and remnants of the original drilling gear visible along a short path. It’s a quiet, worthwhile stop if you're exploring Waterton Lakes National Park and curious about its industrial past.
