The Shorewood Hills Boathouse is another one of the village's most cherished historical landmarks. The wooden stairs are very slick when wet.

      June 19, 2025

The Boathouse was constructed in 1936, about a decade after the village was incorporated. It was built as a key component of the community's central recreational area, which also includes the pool and McKenna Park. Its construction solidified the village's identity as a community deeply connected to Lake Mendota.

The original purpose was exactly what its name implies: to provide residents with a facility for boating and direct access to the lake for swimming and recreation. It was designed as a social and functional hub right on the water's edge.

The building has a charming, rustic architectural style that perfectly complements the natural surroundings of the bluff and the lake. It features:

        * A sturdy lower level built with local stone, which houses boat storage and changing areas.

        * A wooden upper level with large windows and a spacious meeting room/pavilion.

        * An observation deck/balcony that offers beautiful, panoramic views of Lake Mendota and Picnic Point.

The design is intentionally simple and functional, meant to blend in with the landscape rather than dominate it.
