The Foce di Colle Fiorito represents a crossing point of great importance, not only for its strategic position along the Apennine ridge, but also for the evocative beauty of the panorama that can be admired from there. It is precisely in this place that two important hiking itineraries intersect: the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, marked with the acronym AVML by the CAI, and the Via dei Monti, identified with the abbreviation VDM.
The latter connects Levanto, on the Ligurian coast, with Pontremoli, in the Tuscan hinterland, crossing the Apennine ridge that in this stretch marks the natural border between Liguria and Tuscany. The current route of the Via dei Monti follows an ancient medieval road used by merchants, wayfarers and pilgrims to travel from the port of Levanto — which in medieval times served as an important maritime hub — to Pontremoli, where it joined the much better-known Via Francigena.
Also known as "Via de Pontremolo", this route represented a fundamental itinerary both for commercial exchanges and for pilgrimages towards Rome, making the Foce di Colle Fiorito not only a naturalistic crossroads, but also a place rich in history and memory.
