The St. Johannis Church - also called Meldorfer Dom - is a magnificent early Gothic building. No matter from which direction visitors come to Meldorf, the first thing they see is the St. Johannis Church. Because of its size, the church is also called "Dithmarsch Cathedral", but Meldorf has never been a bishopric. The church was built around 1250 and is one of the most beautiful buildings in northern Germany. The church used to serve as a navigation mark, because Meldorf was once on the North Sea coast. Only through land reclamation is it around six kilometers to the sea today.

Inside, St. Johannis is rich in art treasures: Medieval paintings decorate the vaulted domes, the passion altar from 1520 impresses with colorful and gilded figures and the large bronze baptismal font, which dates from the founding phase of the church, was cast in one piece.
