The square was created at the foot of two settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, next to the Manduševac spring. In 1641, the city authorities decided that fairs would be held there.
Today's buildings were built in the early 19th century. Their facades display various architectural styles, from 19th-century neo-style, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau to modern and postmodern.
The square has changed its name several times. Initially, it was used for trading, so it was called Harmica, after the Hungarian word for thirty-cent tax, a customs duty levied on goods.

Hiking
Large open Piazza area in the center of Zagreb. Surrounded by cafes and a main hub for many of the tram lines. There is also a large statue and fountain here. It's a nice place to stop for a drink and people watch.
