The northern Eifel region, crisscrossed by numerous rivers, is ideally suited as a water reservoir. The Rur River, for example, originates in Belgium, and from Einruhr to Rurberg, the Obersee (Upper Lake) is dammed. From Rurberg to Schwammenauel, the Rurtalsperre (Rur Dam) forms part of this network, and the proverbial "third element" is the Urft Dam, visible here, located northeast of Einruhr above the Obersee. A hike around the Obersee (a distance of approximately 16 kilometers) leads across the Urft Dam.

The dam is very impressive, as is the view of the Urftsee and Obersee. The Urft Dam is the only one I know with three towers. There's a sign on the side of the restaurant explaining how the dam works.
