The Sutro Baths in San Francisco were once a grand public saltwater swimming complex, built in 1894 by Adolph Sutro, a wealthy entrepreneur and former mayor of the city. The baths were designed to provide affordable recreation for San Franciscans, featuring seven pools at different temperatures, slides, trapezes, and even a museum showcasing artifacts from around the world.

Despite its ambitious design, the Sutro Baths struggled financially due to high maintenance costs. Over time, parts of the facility were converted into an ice-skating rink, but by 1964, the site was sold to developers for a planned high-rise apartment complex. However, before construction could begin, a fire in 1966 destroyed the remaining structure, leaving behind the ruins that visitors see today.

Now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Sutro Baths ruins offer a glimpse into San Francisco’s past, with stunning coastal views and a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. It’s a popular spot for photographers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking to explore the rugged beauty of Lands End.
