Jerash, just north of Jordan’s capital Amman, dates to the 4th century BCE, when it was founded by Alexander the Great. It reached its peak as a major Roman trade and administrative center in the 3rd century CE and is considered today to be one of the best-preserved Roman outposts outside of Italy. No one visiting Jordan misses the ancient city of Petra south of here, but many don’t allot enough time to experience Jerash.
