The mentions of the church are connected with a legend, according to which around 1200, Duchess Jadwiga, wife of Duke Henry the Bearded, stayed on the hill where the present temple stands. A strong wind tore off her veil, which the duchess considered a sign from God and decided to build a church in that place. In 1477, during the demolition of the dilapidated church, a board was found with an inscription that the temple was being built with the foundation of St. Jadwiga of Silesia.
