Built in 1920 to replace the chapel of the same name that stood on the site of the present lake. According to tradition, the chapel of Agia Varvara was destroyed by the Ottomans during their conquest of Drama in the 14th century so that an Ottoman mosque could be built in its place. However, their plans changed on the day of Saint Barbara, when the area was flooded and a lake appeared, covering the construction site. Thus, Saint Barbara was declared the patron saint of Drama, and this church was built.

However, on the feast of Saint Barbara, the area flooded, creating a lake that covered the construction site.
