The slopes west of the Wern and the surrounding heights, on the other hand, are predominantly covered by glacial loess (blown from the west).[7] Fertile, parabrown soils formed in the loess during the Holocene, but these soils are now barely preserved due to soil erosion caused by intensive agricultural use over centuries. In the rocks of the Lower Keuper (relocated by solifluction during the glacial period), denser and less productive loamy-clayey soils developed. The Werngrund region is predominantly composed of alluvial loams.[8] The river overflows its banks there almost every year.
