Old Chamber Lock + Water Level Clock Tower – Ludwigshafen 🚴‍♂️

The former Chamber Lock is a listed building in Ludwigshafen and was built together with the Luitpoldhafen between 1894 and 1897. The lock was necessary to prevent water flowing from the Rhine through the harbor basin, as the other end of the harbor basin is located about 2.2 km downstream. It was decommissioned in the 1960s, and the swing bridge and lock gate on the northern side were dismantled in 1967. A dam, built subsequently, has since firmly connected the water level clock tower to the park island. The southern part of the island has been undergoing transformation since 2005, with modern residential development predominating in the Luitpoldhafen.
The associated, approximately 20 m high sandstone tower was built by the Royal Road and River Construction Office of Speyer around 1900; Today, it is a listed building. It stands on a paved foundation and features a water level indicator at its top, indicating the water level in the harbor. The two hands are visible from all directions. The outlines of the former lock chamber and other technical details are still visible on the tower. The display mechanism inside comes from the Otto Behm Institute in Karlsruhe. The water level indicator has been out of service since 2015. The tower is owned by the Ludwigshafen am Rhein Port Authority. 🚴‍♂️

"Anyone who gets to the Parkinsel via the former chamber lock will see a mighty sandstone tower about 10 meters high on the waterfront on the right of the dam with a clock that strangely enough only has 10 large golden digits on the blue dial. It is not a chronometer, but a measuring device for determining the Rhine water level.
The building is square in plan and stands on a paved square. In the lower part, the sandstone walls are built vertically on the base, the windows, the door and the corners of the building are emphasized. After a surrounding frieze, the tower tapers. Spacious dials with two hands are attached to all four sides of the cube-shaped head of the tower. The roof is again provided with small ornaments.
The level mechanism constructed by the Karlsruhe Institute Otto Behm is intact and functional, but no longer official and therefore no longer calibrated. The level tower, built around 1900 according to plans by the royal road and river construction office in Speyer, has become a symbol of the Park Island.
The tower stands at the southern gate of the former chamber lock, which was built in 1884-94 in connection with the Luitpoldhafen. The recesses for the revolving gates are still clearly visible in the sandstone, as is the outline of the lock chamber."
