Not just a dam, but a piece of history and a building that is rightly a listed building. The dam is the first and only vaulted dam in Germany with a sloping water side. In fact, it was already doomed to "regulated decay" in the 1970s, but was extensively renovated from 2006 onwards. It is a great highlight on a racing bike tour (with a nice drive), but also for family trips with a visit to the hydropower educational trail that runs around the lake.

At that time, instead of self-sufficiency, they relied on long-term supply contracts with an external supplier. Since the demolition costs were avoided, the complex was preserved. In 1988 the water was drained for safety reasons.
Since then, the valley has mainly served as a local recreation area. For a long time, I only knew the valley like this from my childhood, but I have to say that after a renovation in 2007, it was dammed up with water again, which I definitely like better 😉
