The legends that tell of the passage of two historical figures here give special significance to the area: Ilya Muromets (11?? – 1188), heading from the village of Karacharovo (near Murom) to the city of Kyiv for military service, and Ivan the Terrible (1530 – 1584), who made his third campaign (July 1552) with his large army to conquer Kazan from Moscow through Vladimir and Murom. Everyone certainly sees the Big Stone, on which a mark appears from the blow of the hero’s horse with a horseshoe when he charged at it, and a carved silhouette of the Tsar’s horse’s head, reminding them of their visit to these places. The stone began to be called legendary by the people, and it became a popular attraction for many centuries.
