The excavations suggest that there was a larger fortification. Information boards on site provide interesting information about this.

Ruins of the former Michelsberg Castle

On the plateau itself there are the remains of several once mighty fortifications, over two hectares in size; on the south side of the mountain tongue, which is not protected by rugged rock faces, a three-tiered system of ditches and earthen ramparts, which can still be seen, kept the enemy at bay. The first structure probably dates back to the Bronze Age. The excavations in the years 1903 to 1906 by Friedrich Winkelmann mainly yielded vessel fragments from the Celtic period (around 450 BC). A Roman cellar was also examined. During the Hungarian invasions (early 10th century) the fortification served as a refuge; in the 11th and 12th centuries the structure was further strengthened, as the foundations of a tower still bear witness. The remains of a lime kiln from the 13th century have even been discovered on the mountain.

Interesting place for a ruin ... what moved people to build here?
