The square was named in 2023 after the Slovak Jews Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, who escaped from the Auschwitz concentration camp in April 1944 to warn of the impending extermination of Hungarian Jews. Their escape led them to Žilina, where they reported to the local Jewish community. Vrba later met with the nuncio of the Catholic Church.
