The Old Maritime School in Grünendeich is a former training facility for seafarers. It was in operation from 1858 to 2002. It issued over 5,500 captain's and helmsman's certificates. Today, it houses, among other things, a planetarium where sailors once learned navigation by the stars.
For over 144 years, the Maritime School trained sailors in nautical theory and practice. The school is located directly behind the Elbe dike in Grünendeich in the Altes Land region.
The training included a captain's bridge and a planetarium.
The planetarium is still there today and was installed there in 1958. The former school building is now used as vacation apartments.

The 165-year-old Grünendeich Maritime School is now the headquarters of the Lower Elbe Maritime Landscape. The planetarium offers an impressive view of the stars. A retired captain begins his guided tour in the foyer and takes guests through the historic building to the second floor, where they can enjoy a magnificent view across the Elbe River to Schleswig-Holstein.

In the foyer, you'll find a fascinating collection of former teaching materials from the Old Maritime School, historical and modern nautical charts, scale ship models, and nautical instruments.
