The Gnome Caves are hidden on the steep slopes of the Saale Valley: around 20 rock formations of varying sizes and tiny caves made of red sandstone. Even more fascinating than the crevices and caves themselves are the legends and stories surrounding the gnomes who, according to legend, live there. Apparently, you can see these creatures during a full moon... ;)If you're out and about during daylight hours, instead of looking for the original gnomes, simply look for the handcrafted gnome figurines that peek out from the crevices here and there. The Gnome Cave section is definitely the most family-friendly part of the Kissinger Runde hiking trail.The Gnome Cave Hut, located in the middle of a forest, offers a good place to rest.
