The lock bridge was an important part of the flood fortress; when the lock was closed, the water level of the Saar River rose by 6 meters. The water filled the ditches when necessary and flooded the surrounding area.
This made it almost impossible for the enemy advancing with horses, wagons, and cannons to approach the fortress.
The lock mechanisms can still be seen today on the east side of the bridge piers.
