The Lenne Route was created in 2005. Today – 20 years later – several sections are still unsafe to cycle on. Some of the cycle path runs along the busy and narrow federal highway, some along paths with steep inclines and poor surfaces, and some even along sections where cycling is prohibited.
This section at the Rönkhausen sawmill is perhaps one of the most absurd. The flat route in the valley through the sawmill is actually ideal in terms of topology. However, the sawmill is a private industrial facility, and for understandable reasons, through-traffic is prohibited. The operator has therefore erected an entire array of signs to keep cyclists out of the plant.
The federal highway is narrowly built between the Lenne River and the rock face, including a no-overtaking zone, because it is poorly visible. It is unsuitable for cyclists, and its expansion is unrealistic due to the topology.
Therefore, the city has built the Lenne Route through the forest. However, this forest belongs to the Count of Schmallenberg, who is concerned about liability issues should a cyclist fall on his property. So the city banned cyclists from passing through, only the city didn't care. A no-cycling sign hangs there, despite it being designated as part of the Lenne Route. The surface, with its very coarse gravel and potholes, is only suitable for mountain bikes.

The victims of this village farce, which has now been going on for 20 years, are the cyclists. But there is finally a plan: With the Lenne Route Master Plan (finnentrop.de/output/download.php?fid=2343.5264.1.PDF), the traffic planners propose a new cycle path, including a bridge, on the eastern bank of the Lenne. But this plan is also five years old, and nothing has been built so far. Perhaps because the bridge required is comparatively expensive at almost €1.5 million.

In my personal opinion, a solution should be sought where the existing route is paved in such a way that the count can also drive his forestry machines. This is certainly much cheaper, quicker to implement and not as maintenance-intensive as a new bridge.
