Even in the Stone Age, there were wild beehives producing wax and honey. However, the wild honeybee wasn't truly "tamed" until about 4,500 years ago in ancient Egypt. There, bees were first kept in special baskets (called "hives" by beekeepers) to more easily harvest the various bee products. Soon, many cultures around the world followed the Egyptian example: Romans, Greeks, Chinese, and other cultures. Thus, bees became increasingly important to humans. And not so much for their wax or honey, but because bees help pollinate plants, and beekeeping also increased fruit and vegetable yields!
