Best Hikes to Hexenpütt and Seven Springs

Tips

  • Due to their geological structure, the Baumberge form the most important groundwater reservoir in the Münsterland. The rainwater seeps into the fissures of the limestone and limestone beds and collects over the strong impermeable clay yellow layers like in a tub. The groundwater horizons are tapped laterally through the valley cuts, which leads to spring outlets. In the valleys of the rugged northeast slope, they are the source of the many Aa and Bach water streams, the spring arms of the Munic Aa. West of the Mordkreuz, parallel to the highway, a narrow path leads to the nature reserve Hexenquellen, popularly known as Hexenpütt (Pütt, Low German for wells, shaft) one of the most beautiful, but also the most sensitive, headwaters in the Baumbergen. An explanation for the name witch sources does not exist. However, such an enchanted basin, where the spring water from mountain walls and valley bottom bubbles out, must have stimulated the imagination of our ancestors.

So mysterious stories entwine around this place. The following haunting story took in 1929 to the author of the book "people told", with him the 70-year-old cobbler Anton Hellmer, a gifted narrator in Schapdetten, under his spell.
"Bi'n Witch Putt"Dao seitch se wull, dat et kine Geis-ter giff, owwer de giff't: Jans Jaspers sin child sick, un dao kümp de Dokter, un Jans mott nao Notteln. Dao doth empt the Aptheker de Medsien, and he is a Piard nao Hushen. Wao hey to the witch-goddess, dao there stems a man of men with quite pierced eyes and six o'clock, he is to go to the Medesian, sweetly sweet-hearted.
Jans de sprinkle of't Piard and let the cold come to your eyes. Wait, he snaps his way into the Sieggenbuck, and there's a foat drup. We are in the same place in the lucht un sett'n dal bi de Kamp up de Diarde Hei.
Suh, so it's not passeert, dat häff mi de man sölfst.
